Surf Music All-Star

C’è stato un periodo della mia vita in cui ascoltavo quasi esclusivamente musica surf strumentale. I miei punti di riferimento erano alcune raccolte essenziali più o meno rare come The Birth of Surf, Beach Party: Garpax Surf ‘n’ Drag, It Came From The Beach: Surf, Drag & Rockin’ Instros, pubblicate dalla britannica Ace Records.

I 60 pezzi instros di questa playlist nascono per la maggior parte tra la fine degli anni ’50 e la prima metà dei ’60, con qualche intruso che surfa tra gli ’80 e i ’90, periodo di revival surf grazie a gruppi come Man or Astro-Man? e alla clamorosa colonna sonora di Pulp Fiction.

La selezione inizia con Wipe Out di The Surfaris, in cui possiamo ascoltare forse il primo celebre assolo di batteria presente in un brano pop (il singolo vendette più di un milione di copie nel 1963) e si conclude con un pezzo tratto da Surfin’ USA dei Beach Boys, gruppo che, ahimè, mise successivamente la parola fine al successo commerciale di uno dei più seminali e innovativi generi musicali.
