Hip-Hop&Rap Anthology

Tra la metà e la fine degli anni ’80 ascoltavo tantissima musica rap. Era la golden age dell’hip-hop: l’epoca in cui “sembrava che ogni nuovo singolo reinventasse il genere” (Rolling Stone).
Ho iniziato con Run DMC e Beastie Boys, che erano un po’ il collegamento innovativo tra rap e rock/hardcore, per poi passare ai Public Enemy di cui ho tutta la produzione in vinile. I miei preferiti, però, erano Eric B. & Rakim: un dj che produceva basi strepitose ed il rapper che aveva inventato il flow portando i testi ad un livello superiore mai sentito prima.

Probabilmente solo i Beastie Boys sapevano veramente “suonare”, ma la ricerca musicale, aspetto molto spesso sottovalutato o snobbato dai critici, era di altissimo livello per la maggior parte degli artisti presenti in questa antologia.

La lista si apre con Gil Scott-Heron, poeta e musicista che molti considerano uno dei padri musicali e spirituali di questo genere e prosegue con Grandmaster Flash, tra i primi a capire che “un dj poteva essere una band”.
